WALLINGFORD — A new charity golf tournament later this month will benefit the Spanish Community of Wallingford and the Kiwanis Scholarship Fund. The first annual Nucor Steel Connecticut Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Sept. 23 at The Tradition Golf Club on Harrison Road. Nucor Steel, 35 Toelles Road, employs many Hispanics and has an officer on SCOW’s board of directors, said Maria Harlow, SCOW executive director. The golf tournament is one SCOW’s many fundraising efforts. The organization provides social services for low-to-moderate-income residents of Hispanic decent. This year SCOW, founded in 1972, is operating on a $312,000 budget, with the town contributing $10,000 and state grants contributing $100,000. On Tuesday, the Town Council approved a resolution authorizing the town to apply for an $85,000 state grant for SCOW.

The town acts as the contractor for the state, applying for and receiving the grants, which are provided by the Hispanic Resource Development Program, said Don Roe, the town’s grant administrator. The town in turn subcontracts with SCOW, 284 Washington St., to administer social services, including assistance with drug and domestic abuse, food stamps, health care, legal services and education.

Town Council Chairman Robert Parisi said the agency’s efforts to make sure new arrivals are enrolled in school is crucial.

“It’s important we help people assimilate,” Parisi said. “They’ll be making important contributions.” Those interested can still register for the golf tournament by visiting www.scowinc.org.
