Local teens showed off their creations at their Second Annual Junk Couture Fashion Show.

The teens designed and made wearable fashions from recyclables and other found objects as part of the Adelante! America Youth Leadership Program.  They modeled their fashions with collaboration of the Paul Mitchell School of North Haven, and make-up artist Monse García.  There were 34 students in the 2014 program, and prizes were awarded to teens according to their presentation, creativity and “junkiest” design.

The event included a musical performance by the students, inspired by a field trip to the Shubert Theater in New Haven to see STOMP.  The youth musicians used recycled items as instruments.

The Adelante! America Youth Leadership Program provides youth in middle and high school from immigrant families with support to deal with the challenges of adolescence and prepares them for the independence and responsibilities of adulthood. The program’s goals are to build leadership skills, improve academic performance, instill an attitude of community service and reduce behaviors that lead to disciplinary action.
