• Adelante America Youth Leadership Program: This is such an important program that we have set up a separate page here on our website to fully describe it.  SCOW is proud to say that this program is only one of three in the entire country.  Funded by the AT&T Foundation and LULAC, Adelante America serves 30 students in middle and high school, and is centered around providing appropriate support to deal with the challenges of adolescence in immigrant families, preparing them for the independence and responsibilities of adulthood.  Please click on this link [Adelante America] to learn more about this very successful initiative.

  • Bebes Activos: This program, developed and shared with WE CARE, is a bilingual playgroup where pre-K children, their parents, grandparents and caregivers get together to participate in activities designed to enhance school readiness and success.  There are 12-15 children regularly involved in this program. http://www.wecarecouncil.org/

  • Choate Music: Students from Choate Rosemary Hall are teaching a group of the younger members of our music school to play classical musical instruments.  There are presently twelve of them involved in this weekly class.

  • Employability Skills: Within the Adelante America group, a subgroup has been formed to participate in this program to teach the high school students the job search and retention process to prepare them for the careers after graduation.  Students learn how to prepare a resume and cover letter, conduct an online job search and prepare for a job interview.  They also learn the expectations of employers, appropriate behavior on the job and other job retention strategies.

  • Music Program: This is another program that has had such an important impact on both our agency and the more than fifty children involved that we are directing you via this link [Music School] to a separate set of pages that can better describe this wonderful program.  Its success has had a great impact both within SCOW and throughout the e ntire Wallingford community, delighting both the parents of these students and anyone who has seen them perform.

  • STEM Leadership Enrichment Academy: This program has been in existence for several years, and has been designed around Family Science Nights that provide students in grades 4 through eight and their parents with an interesting and enjoyable introduction to the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  SCOW is now hosting these events, and the collaborative between the Connecticut Education Association, Wallingford Education Association, Wallingford Department of Youth and Social Services, Wallingford Parks and Recreation Department with additional funding being provided by the Rotary Club of Wallingford and others is being expanded.  It has proven to be extremely popular with both the students and their parents, and the introduction that it is giving to the participants is prompting many of them to consider in-depth pursuit of these subjects in school.

  • Tutoring: This growing program provides daily one-on-one or small group tutoring to children from first grade through high school.  The number of participants varies with both the number of students enrolled and the number of volunteer tutors available, but there are always at least ten children involved.

  • Summer Program: For many years, SCOW has held a three-week program for approximately 30 children from six to 9 years of age that participate in a wide variety of activities that are fun, provide exercise and promote education during the summer break from school..

  • Examples of the entertaining and healthy activities are Rumba for Kids and craft making presented by Girl Scouts of Meriden.
  • The educational programs include three trips to the Wallingford Public Library, where the children are encouraged to continue their reading throughout the summer.  During these visits, the kids enjoy a fun story time and lessons as well.  The many teen volunteers from the community that prepare and conduct the programs make this program possible.
  • This year, we are adding activities from both the STEM Leadership Enrichment program and Girls Inc. (see Super Ninas below).

  • Summer Music: Our Music School offer a three-week program during the summer months.  Approximately 20 students between the ages of 6 and 17 learn to sing American fold music and play the ukulele, drums and recorder.

  • Super Ninas: This program is provided by Girls Inc. of Meriden.  Weekly, a group of 10-15 young children participate in educational and recreational activities for the purpose of inspiring them to be strong, smart and self-confident. http://www.girlsinc.org/index.html
